General Information
Ganciclovir is a broad-spectrum, highly effective inhibitor of herpes viruses and is the drug of choice for cytomegalovirus infections, and also has a strong effect on hepatitis B virus and adenovirus.

It is used clinically for the induction and maintenance treatment of cytomegalovirus retinitis in immunodeficient individuals (including AIDS patients). It is also used for the prevention of cytomegalovirus infection in organ transplant recipients and for the prevention of cytomegalovirus disease in AIDS patients who are cytomegalovirus seropositive.
